What’s Wrong With Apple?: My Apple Issues 2008
I thought it pertinent to make a summary post of all the current Apple issues I have suffered from this year. I moved to Apple in the days of the iBook, it was solid, reliable as was the OS (Tiger). Today solid and reliable are no longer two words I would associate with Apple. ‘Customer Beta Testers’, ‘Cheap’, ‘Uncaring’, ‘Profiteering’ and ‘Unhelpful’ are now all words that I think suits them much better. Which is a shame as I do love Apple. Steve, seriously, can you not see what’s going on?
The following list summarises the list of issues I have had this year (some maybe missed):
- First UK iPhone had 12 dead/fully lit pixels, Apple Genius at Manchester Arndale Store refused to replace it!
- OS X Leopard 10.5.0, beta testing Guinea pig anyone?
- 10.5.2, potentially has caused the sleep from wake issue. Either way introduced a raft of bugs.
- iPhone 3G, screen does not sit flush with the body (Couldn’t be bothered to speak to Apple about it as they didn’t care about 12 dead pixels).
- iPhone 3G software (Up until 2.1) has sucked big time. Frequent crashing, phone needing to be completely restored every time I tried to install an application. Keyboard lag, generally so poor I almost decided to give up and get a Nokia.
- iMac and Macbook Pro’s not waking from sleep. It is becoming increasingly apparent that Apple Engineering are about to wash their hands of this and the Apple store wouldn’t even get their hands dirty with it. Add to this the single 1 minute visit from Apple following my second letter to Steve and it’s easy to see they would rather ignore the issue than deal with it – Bravo!
- MobileMe. This has sucked since day one, I appreciate they have been big enough to acknowledge the issue, which is what we want for the waking issues Steve, but the support I am receiving (or not as the case maybe) is nothing short of appalling.
- Macbook Pro battery failure. There is another issue I believe Apple has, which of course is “Not a reported issue” and that is Sony laptop batteries from 12-14 month old Macbook Pro’s. I can actually think of over 50 people that I have contact with who’s batteries all around the 12 month mark have all either suddenly lost battery life or would mysteriously cut out at a specific remaining battery percentage. I had the latter and the Apple Genius told me there was nothing wrong with my battery. 3 hrs later when I forced him to let me stay at the Genius bar and prove it, he admitted he was wrong and I finally got a battery. That was after the 5-7 people with battery and wake/sleep issues that were all sent away as ‘not being able to prove the issue’. Some links can be seen here, here, here and here. There are hundreds more on the Apple discussion forums.
- And finally, Apple so called “Geniuses” who are trained to tell people that problems on the internet and forums are not real problems because angry people on the net are emotional and can’t be trusted. WTF!?
Sleep issues can be seen here, here, here, here, here and here – with hundreds more all over the net and Apple’s discussion forums.
I know they are taught to say it because multiple geniuses have used the exact same phrases. But seriously Apple come on! Angry, upset or nuts… stating that your iMac or Macbook Pro will not wake from sleep or that your MBP battery suddenly cuts out every time at a certain percentage is something called FACT. It either happens or it doesn’t, emotion or anger does not jade these facts.
So far Apple has viewed my site but decided to not help me or contact me, I will continue to try and speak to them but I am not holding out much hope. If you too have suffered from any of these problems please do comment below.

1) Never had any dead pixels on any of my iPhones
No comment, not a MBP user. They will replace your battery if its over 300 cycles though, regardless of issue. Good to keep in mind for aging batteries, which I know is not your issue.
2) I bought Leopard at launch and never ran into any bug issues that made me go wtf.
3) Not sure what issue this is.
4) Mine is perfectly flush.
5) Aside from having single applications crash, I’ve never had the iphone itself crash much less need to ever restore it entirely.
6) No comment, Air user here.
7) No comment, not a MobileMe user.
9) ditto

@Paul, I submitted a slew of Leopard bugs from launch some of which are still open. I think you experience less as you don’t install much software on your mac, maybe it’s that with the 10.5.0 that was causing me issues.
Dead pixels and yellowing screens was a massive issue on launch UK iPhones, i believe you got yours well after the US launch?
Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment – it’s appreciated

1) battery 37cycles – 576Mah. would be replaced by apple? dream on dear!
do you have Apple Care? no? then you’ll need to buy the new battery…
2) now my PowerBook starts with sleep mode indicator lighted up. No video neither on the build in monitor nor on attached monitor. Everything else seems to be working just fine. Chimes, backligting of the keyboard, DVD, hard drive etc. Can start up in target mode pressing “T” key. Can even shut down through pushing briefly the power key and then pushing Enter key. The one strange thing – combination Command+Cntrl+Power have an about 20 seconds delay before restart take place.
Resetting SMC/starting from the System DVD/ changing RAM modules/turning off bluetooth card does not change anything. Computer starts in sleep mode despite all of my efforts.
I must precise that nothing particular happened with my PowerBook Pro. It went to sleep as normal as always and never came back from this state again.
And now I am in search for the magic solution apart of the famous “Care”
Should I also precise that I am not a nut even though I am really upset? ))

Agh, forgot to mention my iPhone 3G )))
I’ve updated it with the new 3.0 firmware and after that A-GPS is kind of mmm… well you name it. Even Maps keeps showing me Chambery as my location )))
which is some hundreds of kilometers from there.
Now thinking about Nokia and stuff too )))
