Downgrading 4.0 GM to 3.1.3

So if you are reading this, your probably in the same situation I was. You have installed iOS4, most likely the GM and you have found out that it sucks ass and you want to go back to 3.1.3. You, like me, probably tried to go back but iTunes won’t let you!? Well I am going to show you how to get back to 3.1.3

The first step is to put your phone in DFU Mode. Go and connect the iPhone to the Mac/PC. iTunes will be like “OMFG your iPhone is in recovery mode” at which point you click on restore. At this point on mac i clicked “alt” – “restore” and selected a 3.1.3 restore image I have. You will get the error that your iPhone cannot be restored….. DON’T Panic. Go HERE and download iRecovery, pick the one appropriate to you (Windows/Mac). Next open up a terminal window and type:

cd /directory/to/iRecovery then type ./iRecovery -s

Wait for iRecovery to load then run the following commands one at a time (it says its going to bring up a cmd prompt – it never does):
setenv auto-boot true saveenv /exit

Then go ahead and do the restore process again – you will now be back at 3.1.3!!!!

iPhone 2.1 Software Update

I just wanted to make a quick post about an update I was eagerly awaiting. Plus it seems like a good opportunity to write something positive about Apple. Regardless of the other articles written here I will praise any company that does good and flame them when they do bad. This time Apple has done good!

For all of you that were on 2.x prior to 2.1 you will know it just plain sucked. It was buggy, laggy and crashy! I’m happy to say 2.1 is none of those and it also introduces some nice little touches:

Pause app install by clicking on the app icon
Triple clicking to go to the previous track
Genius playlist
Option to wipe data after 10 incorrect passcode attempts
iTunes now displays ‘Apps’ space usage
On UK English set iPhones holding ‘.com’ on the keyboard presents you with other domains

Plus noticeable improvements in performance:

No longer lag in the address book
No longer crashes when installing an application
Backups are meant to be faster but I cannot confirm (Disabled them due to frustration)
No lag on the keyboard now
No lag in the SMS section

In all, good update, well done Apple! Though really it should have been like this from day one. Especially since the 1.x versions were stable!

Apple Apps Install Rendering iPhone Useless (The Sequel)

Recently I posted about the installation of applications rendering the iPhone a brick. I thought the interim solution was probably found in that post until today when I had downloaded the “Movies” app from the app store. I was installing via iTunes sync when the phone just went into what looked like a reboot to confront me with that well known screen:

So, yet another reset required. This time I will not be installing any applications until at least version 2.02 of the software which we hope is due in September.

It appears I am not the only one having to carry out multiple resets! R-Fly from Razorian Fly has commented:

it’s not just you – I’m counting – 15 restores since July 12th.

Let’s hope Apple does address this issue in the next update.

David Moore Shares His Secrets of Long iPhone Life

I know, the title is a little strange but it’s a play on a rather lame article about a guy, called Guy and his iPhone posted on TUAW. Yesterday I submitted the news about the iMac and Macbook Pro not waking from sleep to them, needless to say I think they are not interested. I had a brief scout through their site and I can see why they didn’t like it, it was real and slightly serious news!

So I read the ‘Guy‘ article and decided to see just how great Guy is with his iPhone, and found out he is really rather below par. So Guy, TUAW, here is my iPhone usage page. 3G is on 100% of the time, WiFi has been on but is normally disabled, GPS has been on but is usually disabled, PUSH on for Mobile Me calendars, contacts and bookmarks. I have the other two mail accounts set to check every 15 minutes and have over 15 apps installed, mainly games. The usage you see is mainly through games and Omnifocus usage.

So it would appear I beat Guy by 11hrs standby time, 34 minutes usage time and 15mins call time and still actually having the functionally my phone was shipped with!

Note: This screen shot was taken with 10% still left in the battery, I will update with the final figures at battery death.
